STD Testing Procedure in Singapore

Like the symptoms, the screening for sexually transmitted diseases will be different for men and women. Male patients will usually need to provide a urine sample and a blood sample, while female patients will be given a swab test and a blood test. A vaginal swab may also be collected for those who are not on their period. For the best results, it’s recommended that you hold your urine for about three to four hours before providing a urine sample for an accurate diagnosis.

HIV testing, on the other hand, requires your blood sample and is usually done with a finger prick. How can I prevent getting STD?

Getting an STD is preventable — here are some ways to prevent to keep you and your partner safe from STD:

  • Practice safe sex. Condoms are the most effective way to prevent STD like HIV Syphilis, Chlamydia and Hepatitis B.
  • Lubricants. Lubricants help reduce the chance of condom breakage. However, only use a water-based lubricant.

What to Prepare Before STD Testing:

  •  URINE TESTING: Hold urine for at least 4 hours before the appointment. This is recommended for accuracy of the test results. 
  • DISCHARGE (PENILE/ VAGINAL/ ANAL): Avoid cleaning off any genital areas producing abnormal discharge. This might be required for swab sample. 
  • VAGINAL SWAB: If you are undergoing menstruation, inform our staff to reschedule the swab tests as it affects the accuracy of the test results.
