Vaginal Health

Problems pertaining to the female genital region affect both sexually active and inactive women of all ages. This includes a wide spectrum of disorders such as infections, growths, ulcers, vaginal dryness, and painful sexual intercourse (dyspareunia).

Vaginitis is a common problem where there is inflammation of the vaginal canal. If you have vaginitis, you may experience vaginal itching, soreness or discomfort, abnormal discharge, unusual odour, bleeding after sexual intercourse and irregular bleeding. Vaginal infections can be either sexually transmitted e.g. gonorrhoea and chlamydia or non-sexually transmitted e.g. yeast infections.

Our clinic takes you seamlessly from diagnosis to treatment of all vaginal infections including recurring yeast infections, recurring bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted diseases.

Abnormal vaginal lesions and growths can be either benign or malignant. Vulva cysts, warts and molluscum are examples of benign genitalia lumps and bumps. Although ulcers are mostly caused by infections, with the most common being genital herpes, vulva and vaginal cancers can present in a number of ways including ulcers, masses or even just as a persistent rash.

Genital growths can sometimes be diagnosed through a physical examination, however in some instances, a biopsy is required for a confirmatory diagnosis. The prescribed treatment is dependent on the underlying cause.

Vaginal pain during sex can be due to several causes, as such, treatment may differ accordingly.

Our clinic offers diagnosis and treatment for:

  • Genital ulcers
  • Vaginal growths
  • Vaginal itch
  • Vaginal discharge and odour
  • Yeast infections
  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse)

Female Fertility

Premarital screening is a group of tests recommended for soon-to-be married couples that focuses on genetic, infectious, and transmissible diseases. This helps to prevent transmission of diseases to each other and future children, or address and prepare couples for future implications in their family plans in the case of non-preventable conditions.

Pre-conception screening ensures that a woman is physically ready for pregnancy and that existing medical conditions are well controlled. This improves the chances of conception and facilitates a healthy and safe pregnancy.

Couples who are have been trying for a child and are facing difficulties should consider fertility screening. Our doctor will take both partners through a comprehensive battery of tests that include hormonal blood work-up, semen analysis and ultrasound scans.  We remain committed to a holistic approach in management, therefore counselling alongside infertility treatments to boost male and female fertility are available at our clinic.

Our clinic offers the following fertility-related tests and screening:

Menstrual Disorders

Problems surrounding the menstrual cycle are some of the most common female health related complaints and can often be rather distressing. Menstrual cycle issues that women experience include delayed periods, irregular periods, shorter periods, or no periods at all.

Amenorrhea is the absence of periods for more than 6 months in a woman who was previously menstruating. Oligomenorrhea is diagnosed when there is a lack of menstruation for intervals longer than 35 days in adult females. On the other hand, menorrhagia is when periods are heavy or prolonged. For this, it is recommended that you consult a doctor right away since there may be an undetected medical condition that can lead to anaemia and pose serious health risks if left untreated.

To diagnose period-related disorders, your doctor will ask you several questions about your menstrual cycle pattern. Additional blood tests, hormone tests and an ultrasound scan may be necessary.

Our clinic offers diagnostic services and treatment for:

  • Irregular periods
  • Delayed periods
  • Heavy periods
  • Painful periods

Female STD Screening And Treatments

Our clinic offers extensive sexually transmitted diseases testing (STDs) for women. Sexually transmitted infections are contracted via oral and penetrative sex, with unprotected sexual intercourse being the highest risk. Our STD screening involves both blood tests and vaginal swab tests.

The symptoms of vaginal STDs such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea are vaginal itching, abnormal vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding (spotting and post-coital bleeding). Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) may be brought on by a severe STD infection and can cause fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, PID may result in infertility in women. However, some women with STDs do not experience any symptoms. Thus, we recommend that you get tested for STDs if you believe you may have been exposed.

We provide blood STD testing for HIV, Hepatitis, Syphilis and Herpes.

Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma and Trichomonas are diagnosed via vaginal swabs.

We are committed to protecting your privacy, all consultations and test results are kept strictly confidential.

The following services are available at our clinic:

  • HIV testing
  • STD screening for women
  • Women’s STD treatments
  • STD vaccinations

Female Cancer Screening And Cervical Cancer Vaccination

The Singapore cancer screening guidelines recommend that women should undergo regular cervical and breast cancer checks.

Mammograms are recommended for women who are age 50 or older. However, your doctor may recommend doing regular mammograms from a younger age if you have a history of cancer in your family. Any abnormalities such as lumps, breast pain or an unusual nipple discharge will require a breast ultrasound, even if you are under the age of 50.

Pap smears for cervical cancer detection is advised for sexually active women who are 25 years old or older. The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection is the main risk factor for cervical cancer. You can get High-risk HPV testing at the same time when you do your Pap smear. If your Pap smear results are abnormal, further tests may be required.

The HPV vaccine helps protect you from several cancer-causing HPV strains. Women who are not sexually active as yet should get the vaccine. Women who are sexually active would also benefit from taking the vaccine. Those who have had abnormal Pap smears, previous or ongoing HPV infections or genital warts can all still be vaccinated.

Our clinic offers the following:

Female Urinary Issues

The most common urinary complaint among women is urinary tract infection (UTI). UTI symptoms include pain or burning when passing urine, frequent urination, urgency, blood in urine (haematuria) and smelly urine. UTIs can be brought on by dehydration, holding urine for long durations or after sexual intercourse.

Urine tests are used to diagnose UTIs, and prompt intervention with a course of antibiotics is essential to reduce the chances of pyelonephritis – a more serious condition where the infection has spread to the kidneys in the upper urinary tract. It is also important to note that recurrent UTIs may be a sign of an underlying issue and would sometimes warrant further evaluation with imaging studies.

Urinary Incontinence

Weight Loss

Being overweight is a major risk factor for chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, sleep apnoea, osteoarthritis and many more. In addition, weight gain often causes self-esteem and body image issues in women.

The BMI system gives an indication of whether an individual is in the ideal range, overweight, obese, or morbidly obese.

Regular exercise with good dietary intake is key, but nevertheless, losing weight and maintaining weight loss is often very difficult. The first step to achieving a healthy weight is to have a discussion with your doctor and set realistic and sustainable targets.

For some, physician prescribed intervention in the form of oral tablets or injections may be needed in combination with lifestyle modification. These help with weight management through various methods; some work by regulating appetite, others make it harder for our body to absorb fat from the foods we consume.

At our Women’s Clinic, we offer these treatment options in conjunction with exercise and dietary guidance. Through a tailored weight loss program that takes into account your goals and lifestyle, this allows you to lose weight safely and avoid the need for surgical intervention.
